Azagiya Manavalinin Mashi month Garudasevai. Thiru Palli Odam Thirunaal Forth Day. Utthsavam. (Theppa-Thirunaal)

Dear  Members!!!

My Sashtanga Namaskarams to our Azhagiyamanvalan in Garuda Vahanam!

The Theppotsavam has a very interesting symbolism and history behind it. A Theppam (Float) helps us stay afloat any body of water and is generally used to cross a lake or river. Without a Theppam, we will sink to the bottom. The significance behind this is that, Sriman Narayanan acts as a Theppam and helps his devotees to cross the Bhava Sagaram. But for His help, we will drown in our samsaram.

Sriman Narayanan  took the Matsya Avataram in order to enlighten people about this truth. During the Pralaya, He sent the float- Theppam – to King Satyavrata . who  climbed on to the float with the Saptharishis and all other beings as ordained by the Lord. The Lord himself came along as a golden Matsya. Satyavrata tied his float to the golden Matsya using the Sarpa, Vasuki. For seven days and nights, the Matsya roamed the oceans in darkness, lit only by the Tejas of the Saptharishis. Then, Brahma woke up and started srushti. This is the symbolism of the Theppotsavam.

On the 4th day of the Theppotsavam, our Lord proceeds on the Garuda vahanam. Garuda is celebrated as Vedaatma or the embodiment of the Vedas. It was Garuda that gave upadesa of Hayagriva mantra to Desika atop the hill in Tiruvahindrapuram. Garuda is also said to be the Sankarshana amsa of the Lord; the term Sankarshana embodies Jnana (knowledge) and Bala (youth). Swamy Desikan describes Garuda as "Nishparudaso dasah"- an indispensable servant. Sri Garuda vahana starts around 6 pm and the Lord retires around 9.30 pm.

The Garuda vahanam of the Theppotsavam is very special as it occurs in the month of Masi. There is a saying that, "Kasiku ponalum, masi garuda sevai kittadu", meaning that it is so difficult to have the boon of  Masi Garuda sevai even if you go to Kasi! It is well known that Aranganathan's birth star is Revathi in Meena rasi (Moon sign as Pisces). Sukran is exalted (becomes uccha) in Revathi star. It is believed that Sukran is the devatha who symbolizes luxury and comfort and hence, on this occasion, the Garuda is made of silver to symbolize the pomp and luxury that we will receive through the Lord.

Looking at our Azagiya manavalan seated atop Sri Garuda, one might think that Garuda is trying his best to take a look at our Lord sitting majestically on him. Nevertheless, he is content with the joy that he sees etched on the faces of the devotees who are taking in this grand sight.

Indeed fortunate and blessed are those devotees who are able to watch this divine and wonderful sight of our Aranganathan seated atop the magnificent Sri Garuda.

Azagiyamanavalanin Third day utthsavam of Thiruppalli Odam Thirunaal (Theppa utthsavam)

Dear Members and Friends!
My Sastanga Namaskarams to our Azagiyamanavalan in Karpagha Vruksham!

Our King Namperumal Azagiya Manavalan (therefore known as Rangarajan) strolls through the Utthirai streets royally seated on the Karpagha Vruksha vahanam, Karpakam refers to Softness / Kindness / Prosperity. The Karpaka vruksham is a holy tree that is said to bless people with all their hearts' desires. Similarly, Rangarajan fulfills his subjects' true and honest desires and as a representation of this benevolence, Azhagiya Manavalan strolls throughout the day under the shadows of the Karpaka Vruksha vahanam. Those who are blessed to see Namperumal on this day will be prosperous throughout their lifetimes as He would remove all the obstacles in their life.

The view of Namperumal walking with gambiramana oyyiara nadai (the graceful stride of strength and pride) brings a paasuram of the Azhwars to our memoirs.
"Neenda-ap periya-vaaya kangal ennai bedhamai sei-thanave"

Members of this Srirangasri group who are unable to visit Srirangam on this auspicious day can still be blessed by our Azagiya Manavalan by praying to the attached picture of Namperumal on the Karpaka Vruksham.

We will be enjoy the beauty of Namperumal on the Garuda  vahanam tomorrow.

Let us sincerely pray to the Sriranga Divya dampathigal that we would be able to visit Srirangam very shortly to get His blessings

Thiruppali odam Thirunaal. Azagiyamanalanin. Theppa utthsavam 1&2 Thirunaal

To: srirangasri <srirangasri@yahoogroups.com>

Respected members,

It is with great pleasure that I write yet again about Srirangam, the sthala of our Azhagiya Manavalan. The mere thought of  Srirangam brings to our mind our Lord Ranganatha; our hearts and souls are replete with great bliss and joy in Him. Thiruvarangam is not just a temple town, it is the history of the Lord Himself came to reside there. Every celebration is a reminder of Him, His disciples (the great Alwars who gave us the Tamil Vedas – the Divya Prabantham), His consorts, His servants, His thiruvilaiyadal and His grace.

The festivals celebrated here have the express objective of conveying our gratitude to the Lord and His Ubhaya Nachiyars and to unite all  His subjects as one family of Vaishnavites, without any division. The prime among these festivals is the Brahmotsavam, which is celebrated every year in the month of Masi as theThiruppali Odam Thirunaal for ten days.

This is the time when the Rajadhiraja, the King of Kings, goes out to meet his subjects in order to enquire about their welfare and shower His blessings on them. He specifically walks through the streets to give Darshan to the old and infirm who would not otherwise be able to go to the temple to gain His blessings. As a representation of this kingly duty, every morning and evening, Namperumal moves through the Uthirai streets on various Vahanams, to ensure that his subjects are well and truly happy.

On day 1 of the Thiruppali Odam Thirunaal, Namperumal reaches the Ranga Vilas Mandapam from the Sanctum Sanctorum. A procession begins with the Lord on the Hamsa vahanam and goes through the Uthirai streets arriving at the Chandana Mandapam near the sanctum. You may see our Azagiyamanavalan in Hamsa Vahanam in the attached picture. Doesn't He appear happy to revel in the devotion His subjects?

On Day 2 of the Thiruppali Odam Thirunaal, Namperumal blesses His devotees from the Hanumantha vaahanam. The procession begins at 5:30 PM, goes through the Uthirai streets and reaches the Aasthana Mandampam. Hanuman had obtained from Sri Rama, the boon of being with Him through all the Yugas - Kruthayuga, Dwapara yuga , Tretha yuga and Kaliyuga. He incarnates as a devotee to Maha Vishnu in all the Yugas and therefore is the greatest devotee and considered an entity above and beyond the Nava Grahas. Praying to the Lord Anchaneya (Hanuman) at this time is considered very auspicious and beneficial.
