The Chinese have a saying that goes something like this:
'When someone shares with you something of value,
You have an obligation to share it with others!'

India wants DD-Sanskrit !

India wants DD-Sanskrit !

Over 120 million first time voters (out of the 550 million total voters) have registered and voted in this election. Majority of them have clearly voted for a Modi led BJP Government with a decisive mandate.

So what is so significant about this number and why it is connected to DD-Sanskrit

120 million+ first time (young) voters - what this number means - this number is far more than UK (63.7 million) population and Canada (34.8 million) population put together.

Even, if one takes that a 5% of this 120 million young people wants Sanskrit to be revived by the new Government, then it means 6 million people wants Sanskrit. Even if 5% of the total voters want to revive Sanskrit, it means about 23 million people want Sanskrit. Total would be around 30 million people or 3 crore people. When 3 Crore people want something like a Sanskrit TV channel, it is only right to start one sooner.

It should also be noted that the website www.narendramodi.in, its Sanskrit homepage got about 100s of hits every day during 4 months. This alone proves that many are looking forward to such a media.

In addition to this, every single video clip on Sanskrit posted in the Youtube has got 1000s of hits during the past year alone.

Who will be the audience - let us look at some sure numbers:

- 25,000+ Sanskrit university students from 25+ Sanskrit university campuses,
- 60,000 students of Ayurvedic medicine collages,
- 6 crore middle school students (Sanskrit as their 2nd or 3rd language),
- 1,50,000 college students who have chosen Sanskrit in their studies,
- 12 million+ adult audiences who are trained in spoken Sanskrit by Samskrita Bharati and Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan during the past 5 years

Also during the Vishwa Samskrita Pustaka mela during Jan-2012 within a span of 4 days 60 million books (only Sanskrit) worth 7 crores got sold in Bangalore. So there are sufficient audiences for Sanskrit TV Channel.

All these people could become viewers as well as be benefited with a Sanskrit TV channel and Akashavani Sanskrit FM Channel.

This DD-Sanskrit TV channel should also be professionally managed with innovative programs and packaging, unlike other DD channels, so that it can not only get help spread the language but also be profitable. However in this channel all content including Ads should only be in Sanskrit.

Currently there is a social media campaign going-on which appeals to Hon'ble PM Sri. Narendra Modi to take oath in Sanskrit during the swearing-in ceremony - this campaign got about 5,000 signatures, likes, shares and forwards with in 48 hours of someone posting - support is pouring in even from non-BJP sympathisers !. This proves the India's Internet generation (educated audience) loves Sanskrit - the living great grand mother of all our mother-tongues (languages) is looking forward to our attention.

Just to draw a parallel, I compare the current state that is in Canada - There are about 23% Canadians (7 million people) speak French and for them, there are state-run media and communication infrastructure in Canada in French - that being the case, why can't there be a state-run National Television channel and a national FM Radio channel exclusively for Sanskrit in India ?!. Showing 5 minutes Sanskrit news once a day in DD-National channel is not sufficient.

This Television channel can telecast - Simple spoken Sanskrit lessons, Aurveda /Jyotisha/ Vaastu/ Yoga/ Vedic Maths classes, UGC coaching classes for Sanskrit including for NET, Sanskrit classes for Children's and school students, Sanskrit News, Sanskrit Dramas, Cultural Quiz programs, Classes for Vyakarana (Linguistics) & Nyaya (Epestimology), and Spiritual discourses like Bhavadgita in simple Samskrit, etc.

When there is a TV channel for every single official languages of India including for Urdu - why can't there be one for Sanskrit.

If you support DD-Sanskrit,  please forward /share this to as many people as possible and also don't forget to give a "like /+ /retweet" this message.

Thank you
CG Krishnamurthi
- A lover of Sanskrit

PS: - The picture is not true and DD-Sanskrit don't exist as of now !, if you want one please forward this to many people !!.

Brahmotsavam - 10th (Final) Day's Events @ Kanchipuram Varadarajar Kovil

Namaskaram to All,

Wednesday (21st May) is the tenth and the last day of the wonderful Brahmotsavam in Perumal kovil.

The day's events would start with Dwadhsa aradhanam, in late morning. In the evening we would have purappadu in Vettiver chapparam followed by Dwaja Avaroganam, Vedai sathithal, Rakshabandanan visharjanam and finally Archakar mariyadhai.

Dwadhasa arathanam is performed on the last day of Brahmotsavam to remove any thiruvaarathana lobham during the utsavam. In brief, thiruaradhanam is performed 12 times. During the 12th time pushpa yagam would be performed. During this time vedaparayanam would be followed by rendering of Thiruvaimozhi. The event would conclude with Vedaparayana satrumurai and Thiruvaimozhi satrymurai, in melodious tunes to Perarulalan's pleasure.

In the evening Perarulalan would adore Thanga Thiruabishekam and would get on his Vettiver chapparam. The chapparam would be decked with vettiver and beautifully decorated with flowers which would be treat to all our senses. In this puruppadu Perarulalan would not go till Gangai kondan mantapam but would just visit the 4 maada veedhis.

Once Devathirajan is back in Kovil, he would proceed to dwjasthambham to oversee Dwajaavarohanam, the garudan flag that was hoisted on the first day would be lowered. The lowered flag would be placed on Devathirajan's thiruvadi.

Next event is vadai sathithal, in which all the assembled are informed about the various that took place during the utsavam and are thanked for their presence.

On the way to thiru malai Devathirajan would exchange maalai with Andal. Once he has reached his asthanam visharjanam of rakshabandanam would be done for Perarulalan and the officiating archakar.

Mariyadai would be done for the officiating archakar by presenting Perarulalan's slik duppatta, parivattam & maalai.

With this the Brahmotsavam would come to an end.

I thank all of you for having spent your valuable time in reading my mail & your kind words of encouragement. During the last so many days, with my limited knowledge, tried to sow the seed of interest, am sure with the blessings of our Divya Dhampathis, it would germinate in to giant banyan tree in due course. Thanks also to the temple authorities specially Sri. N. Thayagarajan (E.O.) for organizing the excellent event.

Due to time / space / knowledge constrains was not able to share all the details of Varadar & Perumal kovil. As a next step, I would request you all to visit Perumal kovil whenever feasible, in your hectic schedule, to get Perundevi thayaar's and Devathirajan's anugraham in person. All bhatters, without exception, are so kind and willing to explain all the details patiently, so make the best use of their love towards our Divya Dhampathis.

The festivities in Perumal kovil would continue till 1st June, before we have a short break, try and be part of them if possible.
  • Vidayathi utsavam from 22 May ~ 24 June
  • Vasantha utsavam from 25 May ~ 01 June
May the Divine blessings of our Thayaar and Perarulalan be always with you and your loved ones.

My shasthanga namaskaram to Perundevi sametha Devathirajan and to your patience.

Brahmotsavam - Punniya Kodi Vimanam @ Kanchipuram Varadarajar Kovil

Namaskaram to All,

Yesterday (20th May) evening Varadar blessed us all in Punniya kodi vimanam.

Adiyen would like to apologize for the delay in the mail. To try and compensate, I would limit the text and share pictures and videos of 8th & 9th day's events.

This purappadu is a replay of one of the most divine event from the pages of history. As you are all aware our Devathirajan's avirbhavam was from the sacrificial fire of the Aswametha yagam done by Brahma in Kritha yugam. Varadar when emerging from the sacrificial fire came along with the Punya koti vimanam. As all of us have missed the event, our Perarulalan enacts the event for our benefit when he rides out on this purappadu on the ninth day of Brahmotsavam.

Adiyen is pretty sure that the tamizh saying "Gopura dasishanam kodi punniyam" would have been coined after this wonderful purappadu.

The tenth day purappadu would be confined to the 4 maada veedhis so for this year's brahmotsavam this would be his last visit to the raja veedhi's.

Please spare some time to view Thotti thirumanjanam. Don't miss the chance to view the thiruvadies of ubaya naachimar.

The mattyadi utsavam (9th day morning) is in two parts,

By the grace of our Divya dhampathis and your blessings adiyen would try my best to cover the events of the last day in the next mail.

Andavan thiruvadiya charanam
Perundevi sametha Devathirajan thiruvadiya charanam

Dhasan,

Brahmotsavam - Aal Mel Pallakku @ Kanchipuram Varadarajar Kovil

Namaskaram to All,

As the saying goes, all good things should come to an end. My short visit to Kanchipuram is over and am heading back to my lowkeem works, of course with a heavy heart. So for the rest of the events of this year's Brahmotsavam it would back to future tense.

Tuesday (20th May) morning would be packed with lot of interesting activities in Perumal Kovil. The events would start with Aal mel pallakku followed by mattayadi mahotsavam and culminates with theerthavari.

Let me start with Aal mel pallaku and take your thro' rest of the events in the morning. Perarulalan would leave, alone, from the kovil at around 04:30 on Aal mel pallakku. This type of pallakku is unique as Perarulalan would be carried by 4 dolls. When leaving the kovil, Devathirajan would wear nine silk duppatta / porvai instead of maalais. When Devathirajan reaches gangai kondaan mantapam, he would remove the porvai one by one, this event is known as porvai kalaithal. After this, Perarulalan, would head back to kovil with his regular maalai.

All this while our ubhaya naachimaar would be in kannadi arai waiting for their (our) Lord's arrival. As Devathirajan passes the dwajasthambham, the doors would be shut. For the next hour pranaya kalagam utsavam (house hold quarrel between Perarulalan & Naachimaar) would take place to our pleasure. During the whole episode our naachimaar would be standing in the kannadi arai mandapam and Perarulalan would be standing below.

The verbal duel between our parents (!) would be an interesting fare. This event would be similar to the one during panguni uthiram in Srirangam but with less fun fare and without Arayar swamigals. After all kanchipuram is Thayaga mantapam and not Bhoga mantapam.

Finally once our Naachimaar are convinced of our Perarulalan's affection, they would descend from the mandapam to join our Perumal. Then all of them would proceed to 100 kaal mandapam.

Pranaarthihara varadan, nithya thirumanjana moorthy, would come down from thirumalai to join Perumal & Naachimaar in 100 kaal mandapam. Thiruaradhanam would be performed. During thiruaradhanam Naachimaar would not be on either side of Perarulalan but both of them would be on his right side, this sevai is unique to this day of Brahmotsavam.

After this mariyadai would be done for the archakar. This would be followed by puniyavajanam & avahanam, invoking of all holy rivers to decend, for Anantha saras (pushkarani). The archakar, who had mariyadai, would have dip in pushkarani with the nithya thirumanjana moorthy. This is unique as in all the other temples theerthavari is done with chakrathalwar.

After this Pranaarthihara varadan would head back to thirumalai, while Perarulan along with Naachimaar would go back to kannadi arai.

In my next mail I shall touch upon Punniya kodi vimana purappadu.

Andavan thiruvadiya charanam
Perundevi sametha Devathirajan thiruvadiya charanam

Brahmotsavam - Kudirai Vahanam @ Kanchipuram Varadarajar Kovil

Namaskaram to All,

On Monday (19th May) evening our Perarulalan came galloping on Kudirai vahanam to bless us.

Perarulalan was dressed as a warrior. His beauty in general and his graceful eyes would remove all the evil thoughts from our minds.

Devathirajan adored a white thallapa, this is different to the sikkuthadai that he wore during thirurher.

After Varadar came to vahana mantapam to mount on his horse, Kaliyan came silently and was waiting for the king to ride.

Couple of things that mesmerized me was the way imayoor thalaivar was holding the stirrup of the horse and the wonderful joothi.

Today also there was yessal. Our kalian followed Varadar and was waiting for a chance to rob our Varadar of his belongings. On the way back, in front of Thirukachi nambi sannidhi Thirumangai azhwar finally caught up with Varadar and the famous Vedu pari utsavam was enacted. Signifying the mantraupdasam kalian did three pradhakshanam after which he received parivattam mariyadhai and maalai.

Varadar's purappadu during Brahmotsavam, are not confined to maada veedhis, as in other divya desams, but would cover most part of kanchipuram, may be indicate that he is the lord of the entire kshethram. Varadar in almost all his vahanams would go up to Gangai kondan mandapam, where thiru aradhanam is performed, before heading back to kovil.

Ghosti is an integral part of any purappadu. The ghosti in kanchipuram is very famous, both for quantity and quality. Every member of the ghosti is a stalwart by themself and would all assemble to enjoy the beauty of our Lord. The Divya prabhandam reciters (Iyal ghosti) would proceed before our Devathirajan. They would move forward slowly reciting the Divya prabhandam in their charismatic mellifluous tones. Immediately behind Devathirajan would come the veda reciters called the Vedaparayana ghosti, who would recite the vedas in the traditional orthodox style. Every purappadu would last for at least 4~5 hours and all of them are not paid for the service, the only reason for their dedication is that this service would please our Devathirajan. The Vedaparayana ghosti would recite and walk along with Devathirajan with all dedication and would follow our rajan all the way.

In my next mail I shall cover all the events of action packed ninth day morning.

Brahmotsavam - Yanai Vahanam @ Kanchipuram Varadarajar Kovil

Namaskaram to All,

Yesterday (18th May) evening our Varadar would bless us all when he rides on his favorite vahanam.

Perarulalan is closely associated with Yanai. Varadar resides on top of Hasthigiri. Hasthi, in sanskrit, means elephant. Some say that Iravadam, elephant of Indra that appeared during churning of the milky ocean and was given to Indra to ride on, took the form of a hilllock so that Varadar could reside and bless us all permanently. It is also Varadar who had rushed to save Gajendaran from the jaws of the crocodile. It was elephant, gajendaran, who had worshipped Varadr in treta yugam.

The yanai in the vahanam in our kovil is unique!! In all other temples you would see the elephant either sitting or standing but in all the case you could see the legs of the elephant but in our kovil the legs of the yanai are not visible. The reason being, the legs of the yanai are under water at the time of Gajendra moksham. It would be appropriate to say that Our Perarulalan is riding on Gajenderan while in the other temples yanai vahanam is literally to the word.

We got a glimpse of history yesterday as this is what would have transpired after Gajendaran was relieved. He showed as how he took Varadar around the various streets in Kanchipuram. Gajenderan has four tusks and while he did come down majestically during the purappadu, at times he did come charging down to the delight of the assembled devotees. At one point got the chance to witness the yeashal.

Devathirajan's beauty in this vahanam is unparalleled. Swamy desikan in his Thiruchinamaalai had praised the beauty of this vahana purappadu by singing "Aanai pari mel Azhagar Vanthar".

While on the subject of Gajendran, Sri Parasara bhatter in his commentary on Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam, Bhagavatguna Darpanam, faithfully reflects the greatness and grandeur of Lord's traits. He had identified 34 names referring to Gajendra moksham.

After all the purappadu, after dismounting from the vahanam, Varadar would relieve himself of the maalai's would head to kannadi arai. Here thirumanjanam would be performed. If in the purappadu Varadar was alone the he would have ekantha thirumanjanam. If Ubhaya naachimar were also present during the purappadu then we all get another dose of divine blessings. This happens irrespective of the time, yesterday after Gajendra vahanam, Varadar had his ekantha thirumanjanam at around 11:45 in the evening. We all should also take a note and follow this simple message on maintaining personal hygiene after every trip outside.

In my next mail I would cover the Thiruther.

Azagiyamanavaalanin---Chithra-Poornimaa!!!!

Dear sriranga Sri Memembers and Friends,
Adeyen, My Shastanga Namaskrams to Nam perumal and Sriranganachiyar!

Chitra Pournami :This is Celebrated in the Tamil Month of Chithirai . This is actually the enactment of Gajendra Moksham. It shows how Lord Sriman Narayana Cares a lot for his Devotees. The Background story is, once there lived a Elephant named Gajendra and it is very much attached to the Lord Sriman Narayana and the elephant picks the Lotuses from the river and offers it in Lords feet every day. Then one fine day a crocodile catches its feet and drags it to river and elephant tries to go back to banks in vain. Then at last Gajendra cries for help to Maha Vishnu saying ADHI MOOLAME and our Lord who is very compassionate to his Devotees ( human beings , rishis or devathas or Animals) comes in Garuda Vahana(The Great Eagle Mount) and kills the crocodile , gives Moksham to both Elephant and crocodile who were actually Gandharvas and due to curse they were born as Elephant and crocodile , This is enacted in banks of Cauvery.
My pranams to our Azagiyamanavalan
.
On Chita poornima day, our Namperumal starts from Moolasthanam around 8.00am and makes his way to Ammamandapam. He makes frequent stops on the way to his destination (Ammamandapam).  Ammamandapan lies  near the Holy river Cauvery.
In this mandapm our Namperumal will have a Thiruvaradhanam and Naivedyam and kosti  then public Dhasrshanam .
During the evening He leaves from His mandapam to reach the Holy river cauvery and  blesses his Elephant  (by the name of Andal)  as  a Gajendra moksham.

Chaitra Purnima or Maha Chaitri, the Full Moon day in Chaitra month, is a very auspicious day with its spiritual significance and importance for various pujas. Chaitra Poornima 2010 . This festival is mainly observed in Maharashtra, Goa, and some parts of Andhra Pradesh. Hanuman Vijayotsavam is also celebrated on Maha Chaitri.

Chitragupta Vratam or Chitragupt Puja is another important vow celebrated on Chait Purnima day. This puja is dedicated to Chaitragupta, accountant in Lord Yama's asthana. Chitragupt Puja is also observed as Dawat Puja on Bhai Dhuj.

Magh Purnima or Magha Pournami, also known as Maha Maghi, is one of the auspicious Pournami days for Hindu devotees. Purnima is considered as significant in terms of spiritual practice and performing religious rituals
--
As can be seen from several of the festivals and events at the Srirangam temple, Lord Namperumal recognizes and respects each and every one The significance of Cauvery can be compared to the Vraja River which flows in Vaikuntam. Just as one who attains moksham has to enter Vaikuntam after a bath at Vraja river, one who wishes to have darshan of Lord Ranganatha has to bathe first in the Cauvery before entering the temple.

Singing Cauvery's Praise

River Cauvery, as praised by Emberumaanar, is even more pious than the sacred Ganges. Parasara Bhattar, the eldest of the two sons of Koorathazhvan, who is said to have lived in the 12th Century AD explains this beautifully in his verse.

'The water flow at the Cauvery is fast, touching the edges of the banks on both the sides. When one closely looks at the froth, it seems as if Cauvery is laughing.

Parasara Bhattar reasons out this laughter of the Goddess. "Cauvery seems to be laughing at Goddess Ganga and saying 'All of them seem to be singing praise only of you and your greatness. Yes, the water there flows through from Brahmma's Kamandalam to the legs of Lord Vishnu and then Shiva keeps the water on his coil (on his head). You are Lord's Shree Paatha Theertham.'"

Parasara Bhattar says 'Theertham Sunthathi' in reference to Cauvery-a river that makes all other rivers pious. Those who bathe here with purity of thought are said to be relieved from all sins.'

Parasara Bhattar goes on to say, 'The beautiful garlands that one sees every day around Lord Ranganatha are a result of the pure water from the Cauvery. Trees are seen all around the place, flowers bloom every day. All streets and corners are clean and cool, with water from the Cauvery.'

Even more significant is the fact that though there are 10 wells inside the Srirangam temple, the theertham for the Lord and his Thirumanjanam is from the Cauvery, every single day. Is this not a great contribution of the Goddess?

What more, Goddess Cauvery has encircled the Lord from all sides coming round and round him day after day and her presence makes his stay right in the middle of Srirangam a cool and comfortable one keeping him in the right spirits at all times. Thus, Goddess Cauvery is always near Ranganatha.
who has played a role in the well being of the people. And this gesture of rewarding is almost always done immediately without any delay.

Brahmotsavam - Venugopalan thirukolam @ Kanchipuram Varadarajar Kovil

Namaskaram to All,

At last got my chance to be part of Brahmotsavam today morning. Adiyen had the baghyam to see Vradar dressed as Venugopalan, in Thanga chapparam.
When Varadar blessed us all as Rama (Hanumantha vahanam) could Krishnar be behind, in this purappadu Varadar would be in venugopalan thirukolam.

Our Varadar is granter of all bo ons and this sometimes works to his disadvantage!! When we know our lord is the king of all we could, at sometimes, feel let down as we would not be sure if someone at that level would listen to our request and grant our wishes. With that iota of doubt we would start to go around elsewhere with our wishes, this would make Varadar sad as he likes our company and would miss us. How best to attract us towards him, so today he would exhibit one of his other character - sowlabyam, and assure us he is one among us.

In some temples, during brahmotsavam, the Lord would come as kutty krishnar, crawling with butter in his hands. Varadar on the hand comes out as venugopalan. I guess if Varadar would have come as kutty krishnar we would have no doubt enjoyed the beauty but would not have requested anything, thinking he is a small baby. So Varadar has combined both the attributes of sowlabyam and granter of wishes in one thirukolam.

In the chapparam a cow and calf would accompany Varadar and nacchimaar. The expressions on the calf's face reflects the state of mind of all of us, how are mesmerized by his beauty and don't want anything but want only to keep watching him. Don't want to take more of your time, go ahead and have your heart full.

In my next mail I shall describe how we get a chance to see events around Gajendaran moksham.
