Greatness of Gitagovindam

Gitagovinda is the portrayal of madhurabhakthi. Madhurabhakthi means the union of the jeevathma with Paramathma. The Lord shows here in Gita Govinda that He holds us dear, even if we turn away.

Jayadeva sings to the joy of Krishna, wishing him joyous togetherness of Radha, addressing him variously like Govinda, Maadhava, Hari, Keshava etc., according to the situation, and hence it is called Gita Govindam, like Bhaja Govindam i.e., devout yourself unto Govinda. And Radha is none else than Krishna, the very fount of his lila sakthi creative power. She transmutes His glory into prema ananda or Maharaas, the blissful happiness, in which alone The Lord takes pleasure. This is the idea of Gita Govindam. It symbolizing the longing and striving of the individual, for communion with God, culminating in blissful union of Jeevathma & Paramatma.

Gita Govindam is the best known composition of Jayadeva. It is a lyrical poetry that is organized into twelve chapters. Each chapter is further sub-divided into twenty four divisions called Prabandhas. The prabandhas contain couplets grouped into eights, called Ashtapadi.

Importance of GitaGovindam

The king who ruled the country then was a poet also. He composed many verses on Lord Jagannatha of Puri. But his compositions were not as popular as that of Jayadeva. Seeing that everyone sang and read the Gitagovinda of Jayadeva he also wrote another kavya in the same name and ordered that only his work should be read and sung by all and who does not obey this command will be punished. Out of fear people stopped singing the Gitagovinda of Jayadeva.

Once when the king went to the temple he saw Jayadeva singing his kavya in front of the Lord and demanded explanations as to why he did not sing the composition of the king. Jayadeva as though afraid , said that the kavya of the king was nevertheless great but it has to be tested which of the two the Lord holds dear. Then the king agreed as he was also a great devotee of the Lord and they placed all the works of the king and also that of Jayadeva at the feet of the Lord and went home, after locking the door.

The next morning when they opened the door of the sanctum sanctoram of the Lord they saw Jaydeva's Gitagovinda adorning the feet of the Lord while that of the king was thrown on the floor. The king went away grief-stricken and did not eat or drink anything the whole day and went to sleep with heavy heart. The Lord appeared in his dream and said that the king was grieving without any reason because what happened was to show that the Gitagovinda of Jayadeva is dear to His heart though He valued also the work of the king. The Lord told him to respect the Gitagovinda of Jayadeva and popularize it. From that time the king became a disciple of Jayadeva and studied Gitagovinda and also spread its fame.

Another scene was enacted by the Lord to show the greatness of Gitagovinda. A female vegetable vendor who used to go in the night to gather vegetables used to sing the ashtapadhis while she was plucking the vegetables. The Lord who was drawn by her devotion and His love for the adhtapdhi of Jayadeva used to go behind listening to her singing. As she went round the plants the peethambara of the Lord was torn in places by the thorns and branches of the plants. It was the leela of the Lord to show the devotion of the woman to the world that the following morning when the priest opened the door and was astounded to see that the garment of the Lord was torn in places. He told this to the king and both were very sad that this was happened and thought that some aparaadha was done to the Lord by them. Then in the night the Lord appeared in the dreams of both and told them what happened. Then the king brought the woman to the court and gave her enough wealth and told her to sing the ashtapadhi all day with free heart in front of the Lord.By this the king concluded that Jaydeva must be the king of devotees , bhaktharaja.

This is an example to show that the Lord elevates His devotees to the exalted position to be respected by all.

So, to help you be stress free, here are 5 everyday practices that can help beat stress and keep you healthy.

_Why is stress dangerous?_

Stress is a natural response to situations we have to face, but the fact remains that a similar situation may leave one individual a mess but another, untouched. What this implies is that how stressed you feel largely depends on the way you choose to respond to a stressful situation. With the right diet, breathing techniques and the use of adaptogenic herbs, it is possible to alter this response and cultivate a positive attitude that will help us face life's challenges with courage and strength, without losing our cool. Here are the other ill effects of stress.

_Eat the right foods_

According to Ayurveda, food possesses three qualities or gunas – sattva, rajas and tamas. Sattvik food is light, fresh and nutritious, rajasik food is spicy and fans emotions, and tamasik foods are stale and promote the sense of inertia. Obviously, the consumption of a diet rich in rajasik and tamasik foods is bound to keep you in a state of mind that is most conducive to stress whereas a sattvik diet helps keep the mind calm.

Remedy: Make sure you include foods such as pulses, fresh vegetables and fruits, milk and grains such as rice and tapioca. Avoid spicy chutneys and pickles, sour cream,, cheese, onion, garlic and urad dal and you will find a noticeable change  in your ability to cope with stressful situations. Here are some more expert tips to beat stress.

_Use relaxing herbs_

Certain herbs such as cardamom (elaichi), lettuce, celery, peppermint, chamomile and fennel (saunf) contain phytoconstituents that have wonderful relaxing properties. Make these a part of your diet in the form of herbal tea or by working them into the dishes you cook for some stress relief.

Ayurveda recommends the use of adaptogenic herbs (that help the body and mind adapt better to stressful conditions) over time can also help you cultivate a calm mind that does not easily get swayed by extreme emotions. Herbs such as aswagandha, jatamansi, guduchi, brahmi, tulsi and shankhpushpi  help restore the imbalance in your doshas that make up the body and mind. However, it is important you avoid self-medication with these herbs – have them only under the prescription of a registered Ayurvedic practitioner who is well-versed with their use.

_Have an oil massage_

An oil massage has a number of health benefits and one of them is stress relief. According to Ayurveda, abhyanga – the application of oil to the entire body – at regular intervals is an easy way of relaxing not just the body, but also the mind. Use any oil – castor, sesame or coconut – heat it and rub it into your scalp and all over the body; allow the oil to remain for an hour or two and then bathe with hot water. You will actually feel the stress and strain wash out of your system. For even better relaxation, mix in a little powder of shankhpushpi or brahmi into the oil you use for the massage.

_Cut down on unhealthy beverages_

Most of us are addicted to some form of liquid stimulant that we believe makes us more alert and able to deal with the myriad things life brings our way. Caffeine and alcohol tends to increase feelings of anxiety and stress. Cut down on your intake of such beverages and you are sure to observe your stress levels becoming much more manageable. Apart from increasing your stress levels soft drinks also have a lot of unhealthy side effects, so giving up that one habit can do you a world of good.

_Breathe right_

In our constant rush to meet deadlines and do things on time, our breathing takes a backseat. A lack of proper deep breaths greatly reduces the amount of oxygen circulating through your body. This is a major reason for stress related damage to the body. To combat this, make it a point to breathe in slowly and deeply a few times every morning and night – feel your stomach and chest expand as you inhale, and fall as you exhale. Breathe in as you slowly count from 1 to 5, hold for five counts and then exhale while counting from 1 to 5. If possible, learn the techniques of pranayama from a qualified instructor and practice it  every day. Whenever you feel yourself getting tense, practice this deep breathing a few times and you will find the feeling of crisis tide over almost effortlessly. Over time, you will find it easier to cope better with unpleasant situations without getting stressed.
